Elderly woman conned in Lotto scam
PEMBROKE PINES, Fla. (WSVN) -- A South Florida senior citizen was conned into giving more than $10,000 to scam artists who claimed to have a winning lottery ticket, police said.
According to police, an 83-year-old woman was approached last Wednesday by a woman wearing a green shirt seen on surveillance image at the Sedano's Supermarket located inside the shopping plaza at 10345 Pines Boulevard.
It's a popular scam but some say the would not be fooled. Asked If someone would come up to her offering $30,000 to help collect lottery winnings they could not claim themselves, shopper Phillis Fraser responded, "I would think it was a con job."
In this latest case, the woman told the elderly victim she was undocumented and had a winning Lotto ticket she could not cash, authorities said. The elderly victim then offered to help her.
Police said a woman wearing a purple shirt pretended to overhear the conversation and offered to help claim the prize for some money, as well. The 83-year-old then agreed to take the two women on a shopping spree to prove she would not scam them out of the money.
Surveillance video captured the women at the Best Buy near by Pembroke Lakes Mall, JCPenney and Wal-Mart.
The elderly woman drove the women to her bank and home, withdrew money and handed over her jewelry to show she had good intentions.
The three returned to the Sedano's Supermarket. The two suspects told the elderly woman they were going to grab a quick bite to eat but disappeared. They left with $8,500 the elderly woman withdrew from her bank. The $6,500 worth of merchandise that was paid for, and her jewelry valued at $3,000.
"She probably doesn't have money like that to spare. That was probably her life savings," said shopper Debra Upshaw.
If you have any information on these two women, call Broward County Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS. Remember, you can always remain anonymous, and you may be eligible for a reward.
