Big Mama helps local veteran
TAMARAC, Fla. (WSVN) -- Big Mama is helping out one of her long-time supporters.
Wounded war veteran Ira Smith has helped out Big Mama and her Team of Life charity for a long time. Although he cannot donate money, he has donated lots of time to her by making phone calls and assembling giveaway packages.
Smith, who recently lost his daughter, has a home in need of a lot of work, and this time Big Mama is helping him out by giving him a new kitchen, new doors, cabinets and other essentials for his home he did not even think he needed.
A crew from area Home Depot stores came together Wednesday at Smith's Tamarac home to make life a little better for the war veteran. "The guys from Home Depot, they are the greatest," said Smith. "I've been living here in this house, parents died over 30 years ago. Nothing has been repaired in this house."
In addition to serving our country, Smith is one of Big Mama's favorite volunteers. Since he doesn't have much money, he donates his time to her. Smith said, "I said to Mama, 'Is there anything you can help me with?' Within 72 hours, I had a crew of eight people from Home Depot with tape measures and engineers, and now these people are renovating my entire kitchen for me."
All it took was a phone call from the woman known for having a generous spirit and great contacts to get the ball rolling. Thomas Collazo of Home Depot said, "She contacted me and told me there was a veteran in need, and if I could come out to the house and see what I can do."
"God bless Big Mama. May she live forever, and I cannot thank Home Depot for their time, their effort to make me feel normal again," Smith said.
The crew tore down the old kitchen and replaced it with a brand new one. "I'm getting a brand new sink, granite tops," Smith said.
The kitchen was not the only area of the house in need of attention. Collazo noted some of the additional work his crew helped complete: "celling fans, doors, new kitchen cabinets, appliances, sink faucets, drop ceiling, tiles, air conditioning. It's a pretty long list."
Smith has also been heartbroken since losing his daughter to multiple sclerosis recently. He says all of this help with the house is helping to lift his spirits a bit. "I'm going through bad depression, and this started to ease my depression that I'm going to feel like a normal person again."
