Pipe bomb explodes under car; no injuries
PLANTATION, Fla. (WSVN) -- Officials are investigating after a pipe bomb exploded under a car in a South Florida neighborhood.
Police believe this may likely be a case of vandalism, but they continue to investigate.
At around 7:30 p.m., Plantation Police and Fire Rescue units responded to the scene of a reported car explosion at the Town Homes at Jacaranda along Cleary Boulevard in Plantation, Wednesday.
Kevin Smith, who lives in the area, said, "I heard something really, really loud. It sounded like a gunshot, and I walked outside and all the neighbors walked out. I went down the street and there was smoke around here."
According to officials, the call came in as a car explosion, but when they arrived on the scene they discovered a partially exploded pipe bomb. "As I was pulling in, I hear all of this commotion," said Angelo Cuestas. "I heard an explosion."
The explosion damaged the car and left a hole in the ground. "We figured it was like a transformer or something," said Christopher Smith. "We saw the headlights of the car, tail lights, hub caps, a lot of stuff just blown out of the car."
No injuries have been reported.
The bomb squad and investigators are now trying to figure out who put the pipe bomb under the car.
