Discovery of pipe prompts apartment evacuation
SOUTHWEST MIAMI-DADE, Fla. (WSVN) -- What started as a serious response to a suspicious item turned out not to be a dangerous threat to residents.
According to police, a pipe discovered just after 8:30 p.m. Thursday near a dumpster at an apartment complex along Southwest 107th Avenue and 83rd Street prompted the evacuation of tenants. "Everybody on this side were all evacuated, so we can't get in," said Christie Haupt. "Yes, yes, you wouldn't think this would happen in Kendall."
As a precaution, a portion of the apartment complex was evacuated, while Miami-Dade Police, Miami-Dade Fire Rescue and the bomb squad responded to the scene. "You just saw a bunch of cops, like seven or eight of them easily, followed by a bunch of fire trucks, rescue, and I saw a police van go in there," said another resident.
Authorities eventually determined that the suspicious item was a PVC pipe. They removed the pipe and allowed the tenants back into their apartments.
