Family honors slain teen on her birthday
SOUTHWEST MIAMI-DADE, Fla. (WSVN) -- The family of a teen who was killed nearly a year ago visited her grave site on what would have been her 14th birthday.
Family and friends of Lourdes Guzman-DeJesus released paper lanterns at her grave site Thursday evening. She was shot by a classmate on a school bus in Homestead last November.
Her mother said she continues to try to move forward each day. "I said I'm going to be strong, and I've been strong, and I just thank everyone who's around me. Everyone that loves my daughter. I feel everybody's prayers," said Ady DeJesus.
Investigators said 15-year-old Jordyn Howe brought the gun on the bus and the weapon accidentally discharged.
Howe has been charged as an adult with manslaughter. His trial is expected to begin in February.
