Former South Fla. X Factor winner stars in new play
SUNRISE, Fla. (WSVN) -- A South Florida star who took the very first X Factor title is now taking center stage in her hometown.
Melanie Amaro's life has been a whirlwind after the reality show. And now, after concerts and commercials, Amaro is the star of something new.
Amaro is staring in the play "You're Never Alone," making its big debut at the Sunrise Musical Theater on Friday. "I'm really excited. I can't wait to do my thing Friday night," said Amaro.
The play tells the story of four friends who reflect on real-life situations. "It's very impactful. If you really sit and think about everything that's going to be going on in the play, it just shows so much of everyday life," said Amaro. "If you just lean on God, you know you're never alone. He's always there."
Music is still a very important factor in Amaro's life. After taking the first ever U.S. X Factor title two years ago, she scored a $5 million recording contract, the largest guaranteed prize in TV history.
She dropped three hit singles and a music video for the song, "Don't Fail Me Now." Amaro also co-starred with Sir Elton John in a Pepsi Super Bowl commercial.
Amaro said X Factor was a total game changer for her. "Going through that, it is a great experience. It helped me learn a whole lot about myself," she said. "It also showed me my faith, how strong my faith was, because at times I doubted myself that I was even going to win the show."
In the new play, opening Friday, Amaro admitted she will even be singing a few songs. "We are gonna work so hard to make this one of the best plays South Florida has ever seen," she said.
The play is written and directed by Henry Fernandez from Sunrise. It also stars gospel sensation James Fortune.
Tickets range from $20 to $35.
