Family, friends rally for teen tased by police
MIAMI BEACH, Fla. (WSVN) -- Friends and family of a South Florida teen killed during an altercation with police are demanding justice.
Israel Hernandez ran from police after being caught spray-painting an abandoned building. Officers shocked him with a Taser, and he died a short time later.
His family is now suing the Miami Beach Police Department and demanding the officer involved be disciplined. The family is also asking the department to reconsider its use of Tasers. "We're going to march in peace and love for Israel Hernandez today," said the victim's sister Offir Hernandez. "Police supposed to stop crime. I do not know why my brother died."
Miami Beach Police have not made any comments on the rally.
Officer Jorge Mercado is on paid administrative leave while the case is being investigated.
