WEST MIAMI-DADE, Fla. (WSVN) -- Kicking off the first Sunday of October, nearly 100 South Florida brides are helping fight off cancer while searching for the perfect wedding dress.
"It is an amazing feeling to know that we are not only helping girls find their dream dresses, but we're also helping a cause and raising money and supporting those who are going through cancer, so they don't have to go through it alone," said Vanessa Pederson for Brides Against Breast Cancer.
In their biggest fund-raising campaign, the Brides Against Breast Cancer organization sells more than 1,000 new and used designer and couture wedding gowns in 120 cities across the country.
More than 1,000 designer gowns were on display at the Doubletree Hotel in Miami for these brides to be. "The money will be used for free services for people who are impacted by cancer and go to cooking classes, exercise, support groups, things like that," said Pederson.
You don't have to be a model to be able to walk away a winner. The dresses range up to size 18, and they're sold at discounted prices.
Most of the dresses are donated to the charity directly from designers and manufacturers themselves. Others are handed over from brides who have already said, "I do."
"Some of these are not secondhand dresses, some of these are brand new gowns that have been donated to use, so it's really great, and a lot of girls are finding dresses that are brand new," said Pederson.
"I've been to five different stores looking for a dress, and I got my dress I wouldn't have been able to afford at any other store," Amanda Gehrt.
Brides Against Breast Cancer started 15 years ago by a former bridal boutique owner who was diagnosed with cancer. She wanted to help others and brides across the country love that they can help.
"I've heard that it goes to specific families that are struggling with it, specific women, so I just want my money to go to something good," said Gehrt, who bought a wedding dress.
