Explosive device found at Miami Gardens ATM
MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (WSVN) -- Police are looking for several suspects who they believe set some type of explosive device next to a Wells Fargo ATM in Miami Gardens.
The elaborate operation that took place during the overnight hours of Thursday, ended unsuccessfully for the pair of crooks that were trying to break into an ATM machine at the Wells Fargo bank located along Northwest 27th Avenue just south of 199th Street in Miami Gardens.
Police said, an explosive device, possibly a grenade, was found on the outside of the ATM. Officials brought in a bomb squad robot to take the device into a nearby field, where the explosive device was safely contained by the Miami Gardens Police Department.
Maya Francois, a Wells Fargo customer, said, "That's crazy. It is amazing that they had the time to do all of that, with all of those cameras."
Another customer added, "I always do keep an eye out when I go out to the ATM. I always look around at my surroundings," said George Small.
According to police the crooks fired shots at the ATM and covered a surveillance camera on the machine with yellow spraypaint. Crews are now working to repair the damage.
Residents who heard the gunfire were surprised to find out this was happening in their neighborhood. "I heard the gunshots and came to the back door cause I was scared," said a nearby resident. "I didn't really know about that until the news this morning, and I was shocked but at the same time ain't nothing surprising anymore."
Police continue to look for the people responsible.
