Crews searching for missing plane spot wreckage
CHESAPEAKE, Va. (AP) -- Crews searching for a plane from Florida that didn't reach its Virginia destination spotted the wreckage of a small aircraft in an extremely remote section of the Great Dismal Swamp on Friday, according to Virginia State Police.
Ground crews were trying to make their way to the site Friday evening, state police spokeswoman Corinne Geller said.
She said the crew of a privately owned helicopter assisting in the search spotted the wreckage shortly after 4 p.m. and notified state police, who were unable to launch their own aerial search because of bad weather.
The Civil Air Patrol, park rangers and rescue personnel searched on the ground and by boat through a heavily forested area in the northern part of the swamp Friday. Canine teams also were brought in.
There was no immediate word whether the pilot was flying solo or with passengers.
