Bail hearing for Fla. man in Facebook slaying
MIAMI (AP) -- A bail hearing is set for a South Florida man accused of fatally shooting his wife and posting pictures of her corpse on Facebook.
The hearing Tuesday in Miami-Dade Circuit Court will give 31-year-old Derek Medina's lawyer a chance to argue that he should be released before trial. Most defendants charged with murder in Florida do not qualify for bail, but there are exceptions.
Medina told police he killed his wife, 26-year-old Jennifer Alonso, in self-defense because she was attacking him and threatened him with a knife. He said in a police statement he posted the photos of her body on Facebook to let family members know what happened.
Medina has pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder with a firearm in the Aug. 8 shooting in South Miami.
