Man swims to shore after car plunges into lake
DAVIE, Fla. (WSVN) -- Police pulled a man from a South Florida lake after he lost control of his car and plunged it into the water, Thursday.
"I backed it up, go to put it back here, and by the time I know, 'Boom!' the tires just got in there," Manuel, the driver, said. "That's the only thing that happened. I don't even know how it got in there."
Police and fire rescue crews arrived at the scene inside Summerlake Apartments at 5641 Summerlake Drive in Davie. Investigators said the victim jumped one of the apartment complex' parking stumps and went into the lake.
The victim managed to get out of the vehicle. A man who was doing some roof work witnessed the incident and ran down to try to help him. "We see a car, like right in the middle of the lake, facing that way, and he was standing on the hood," Mike Levy said.
Authorities arrived on the scene minutes later, and a police diver helped the victim out of the water. Witnesses said he thanked his rescuers before he was loaded into a rescue truck. He is expected to be OK.
The victim's car was later pulled from the lake. No one was hurt.
