Man recovering at hospital after shooting spree
OPA-LOCKA, Fla. (WSVN) -- A South Florida security guard is thankful to be alive after coming under fire on the job.
Twenty-six-year-old Marcquise McLemore has three gunshots in his body. "Everytime I sleep, I pitch up because I still think someone is there trying to shoot me," said McLemore.
The two gunmen were not trying to shoot at McLemore. He was sitting in his security guard booth while doing an overnight shift on Thursday outside the Opa-Locka's Garden Apartments.
When McLemore bent over, at least three bullets pierced his unprotected guard booth and struck him. "I bend down to scratch myself cause, you know, working at night makes you nervous, you know, just staying awake," said McLemore.
His blood would wind up smeared all over the inside of the guard booth. "You know, it's like when you see an animal get shot and just take off running with that adrenaline. That's how it was with me," said McLemore. "I saw the blood just shhh, shhh, shhh, it was just coming out of me like a faucet water."
When police arrived on the scene, the gunmen had fled. Police said they shot several bullets at a car during an argument. "You steal a penny and these people will cause a big gunfight over something so small," said McLemore.
One of the intended targets, a man, was grazed by a bullet.
McLemore said he almost did not go to work Thursday morning, but he needed the money for school. "Before I actually passed out, I was yelling out my parents' name," he said.
Even in the hospital bed, unable to move a part of his hand, McLemore said, he knows he did his job. "I would rather me take the bullets knowing that I saved all those people's lives," he said. "I am glad to say that I was a shield to protect them."
McLemore was unarmed while working. He is recovering at Jackson Memorial Hospital, and hopes to be released Friday night or sometime during the weekend.
If you have any information on the two gunmen, call Broward County Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS. Remember, you can always remain anonymous, and you may be eligible for a reward.
