Elderly man assaulted inside transit bus
MIAMI (WSVN) -- The Friday commute turned violent for some South Florida bus riders after a man began beating an elderly citizen who, according to witnesses, accidentally bumped into him.
Miami Police said 74-year-old Millien Pierre was attacked Friday, moments after he boarded a Miami-Dade transit bus on Northeast Second Avenue, just north of 79th Street. His alleged attacker, 36-year-old Karl Alexander McCalla "repeatedly hit him over the head," said Miami Police spokesperson Kenia Reyes.
"He pushed me, I pushed him," said Pierre. "Then [he started beating me and] I fell down." He insisted the attack was unprovoked.
"The other guy was just punching him; he punched him down to the ground," said bus passenger Sylvia Cruz.
Fellow passenger Katy Lacoste said McCalla wanted to get off the bus as Pierre was attempting to board. "[Pierre] bumped into him and [McCalla] went off on him," she said.
A woman standing next to Pierre said McCalla punched him so hard, he started to bleed. "In the head, everywhere, you see?" she said as she showed her blood-stained shirt collar.
Cruz said other passengers started screaming at McCalla, urging him to stop beating Pierre. "'Get off that man, get off that man,'" she said.
"A man behind me quickly ran up to the front and split the two up," said witness Deundre Baker. "The bus driver quickly closed the doors and proceeded to call the police."
McCalla's punches left bruises and cuts all over the victim's body. He was treated and released on the scene.
"He's a bit dizzy now," a man next to Pierre said, as he translated the victim's comments.
"I hope you feel better," Cruz told Pierre.
McCalla has been charged with battery on an elderly person. His police record includes prior burglary, assault and battery charges. He remains behind bars on $15,000 bond.
"We don't know why this younger man decided to beat this elderly man," said Reyes. "We don't know what was going through his head. Most definitely what we can say is, try to have patience and definitely have a heart for the elderly."
