Police: Toddler's death was a homicide
DORAL, Fla. (WSVN) -- Police are investigating the death of an infant who had gone missing Saturday and was found unresponsive in a ditch, officials said.
Detectives said 1-year-old Mariah Johnson went missing from her home located off of Palm Drive and Southwest Ninth Avenue in Florida City, around noon.
Neighbors said friends and family went door to door looking for the toddler. "We were notified that a little girl was missing," said area resident Tasha Gates. "[They said], 'Be on the lookout for a 2-year-old,' and they showed us her picture."
Johnson was found about two hours later. "They were trying to resuscitate her and everything, so they laid her there on the ground," said Gates. "It was devastating. I was crying, and we were praying really hard because the life of a kid, 2 years old, so the mother and the father were on the scene crying."
Mariah, a month shy of her second birthday, was taken to Homestead Hospital, where she later died.
Neighbors said Johnson was last seen with a family friend. Police are investigating her death as a homicide.
The cause of Johnson's death remains under investigation. No arrests have been reported.
