2 dead, 2 injured in shooting in rural area
SOUTHWEST MIAMI-DADE, Fla. (WSVN) -- The Medical Examiner's Office has confirmed that two people are dead and two others are recovering in area hospitals after a shooting in a rural area of South Florida.
On Monday morning, officials removed two bodies from the area. There is speculation that the shooting stemmed from a cock-fighting ring. However, police have not confirmed this information. "We're not going to discard any of the possibilities that are going on or any activity that goes on here," said Miami-Dade Police Detective Alvaro Zabaleta.
Chaos erupted Sunday when a barrage of bullets in an agricultural area struck an unspecified number of people, officials said. One woman who lives nearby heard the gunfire ring out. "I bring everybody inside, my son, my grandson and my husband," said Idalia Cruz Parras.
Police said the shooting took place just before 8 p.m. in the area of Southwest 196th Avenue and 168th Street in Southwest Miami-Dade. Investigators said the incident took place in an open area with a structure.
One of the victims brought out on a stretcher by rescue crews was a man with brown paper bags over his hands. He was taken to a nearby hospital around 9 p.m. "What was the motive?" Zabaleta said. "What was it that sparked this type of violence?"
Zabaleta said they are still early in the investigation and are attempting to determine a motive. "We're going to look very thoroughly, look at all the evidence, hopefully receive information from other individuals that were here during the time of the incident that maybe can help us throughout the case," said Zabaleta.
Neighbors said the property frequently sees chaos and people coming and going. "In this corner, everybody is just, just terrible," Parras said.
One of the deceased victims has been identified as Agustin Figueredo.
Police said those injured are recovering in the hospital and are expected to be OK with non-life-threatening injuries.
Cock-fighting is illegal in Miami, so it is still an open investigation.
