Students honored for helping injured classmate
MIAMI (WSVN) -- Two South Florida students are being honored for their brave actions after they came to the aid of an injured classmate earlier this year.
Pablo Sanchez and Rachell Otero from Redland Middle School are being honored by the Miami Police Department's Do the Right Thing Program. The two teens sprung into action when their fellow classmate, D'Angelo Marte, was shot in the leg while sitting in his classroom on May 24. According to officials, a gun in another student's backpack discharged and a bullet struck Marte on the leg.
The two students used Marte's shirt and Sanchez' undershirt to apply pressure to the wound. Marte was then airlifted to Miami Children's Hospital where he was treated for a fractured leg.
Marte now has permanent damage to his growth plate, but he has since returned to school.
