Man attacked near Miami Beach police station
MIAMI BEACH, Fla. (WSVN) -- A local man, who moved to South Florida only weeks ago, came under attack within a half block from a police department.
Johnathon Levi Powell is a young up-and-coming hairstylist who came to South Florida from Seattle and was enjoying what Miami had to offer before he was attacked on Drexel Avenue, near the Miami Beach Police Department.
When Powell was first confronted by 23-year-old Maycol Quintero and 22-year-old Ian Sanchez, he said, the two were friendly and flirtatious.
The duo pulled up to Powell early Monday morning after a night out. According to Powell, after flirting, the men asked for a location to park their car, so they could enter a few clubs on South Beach. "I tried to kindly direct them where they can park and turned to walk to my apartment, and that's when the attack started," Powell said.
According to Powell, Quintero and Sanchez grabbed weapons and rushed out of their car. They put a knife up against Powell's neck and chest. "The guy with the neck tattoo hit me with the handle of the gun right here on my forehead and on the back of my head," Powell said.
Powell handed over his cell phone, wallet and house keys, and then the two attackers raced off. He then ran into the Miami Beach Police Department and told officers of the incident and detailed a Silver Nissan they escaped in. "Well, these guys are hardcore criminals," Miami Beach Police Sgt. Bobby Hernandez said. "You would think that they would have a little bit more sense of where not to commit a crime."
Due to Powell's description of the suspect's vehicle, officials were told to be on the look out. One officer was able to locate the vehicle leaving South Beach, but as the officer tried to pull it over, they sped off.
The officer was able to see the license plate and used it to track the car to an address. Quintero and Sanchez would later be arrested.
Despite the suspects' polite attitude in court, a judge ordered them to be held in jail without bond.
Now that the attack is over and the attackers were caught, Powell is back enjoying his life on the beach and is overwhelmed by the support he has received from his new friends.
