Man injured in police-involved shooting outside Publix
HIALEAH, Fla. (WSVN) -- Authorities are investigating a police-involved shooting that critically injured a man.
According to investigators, Tuesday night, a police officer was working a detail, when an altercation involving a man broke out at the parking lot of the Publix Sabor, located at 1290 West 68th St.
"When I was leaving, there was an employee meeting going on, and I asked the store manager what was going on," said customer Victoria Coppoloff. "She said that somebody had their purse stolen and somebody got shot. We heard the helicopter land, and when I came out, everything was on lock down."
Investigators said an officer was forced to fire on a man in his 30s, who was allegedly involved in a crime. Police have not disclosed the type of crime that was committed and the motive for the shooting remains unknown at this time. "Well, apparently at some point, there was some sort of confrontation with this officer and this subject. Other officers responded to the scene within minutes," said Hialeah Police Lt. Carl Zogby.
The suspect was airlifted to Jackson Memorial Hospital in critical condition. Wednesday morning, relatives identified the suspect as 30-year-old Javier Diaz. "He left, and look at what I'm going through now," said the subject's mother through a translator. "Please, Lord, protect him and save him."
According to family members, Diaz is on a ventilator and can possibly be paralyzed.
The suspect's sister is supportive of her brother despite allegations. "Might've done what he did, but he's a family person," said Susana Lopez. "He always cares about family, has two kids, one with autism, that he's trying to provide for."
Now the suspect's family is demanding answers. "A big question, very big question on why you would shoot someone who wasn't armed three times," said Lopez.
Authorities continue to investigate.
