Alleged taxi cab thief arrested
MIAMI (WSVN) -- Authorities have arrested a man who was behind the wheel of a taxi he allegedly stole and then crashed on the MacArthur Causeway, Tuesday night.
The accident marked a dramatic end to a chain of events that spanned two counties. Florida Highway Patrol officials said the subject stepped into the white taxi cab in Broward County around 9 p.m. and at some point got into an altercation with the driver.
Investigators said the driver pulled over on Interstate 95 to call police, at which point the suspect forcibly took the vehicle and fled, leaving the driver behind. FHP issued a BOLO, which was picked up by a unit on the MacArthur Causeway.
FHP troopers said the subject crashed into another vehicle as he headed west on the causeway, approaching Interstate 95. Officials said the subject left the scene on foot but was taken into custody in the City of Miami shortly thereafter.
The suspected car thief will be charged with grand theft auto, leaving the scene of an accident and possibly other charges.
No serious injuries were reported.
