Hockey dad punches teen during game
LAKE WORTH, Fla. (WSVN) -- Rough play on a South Florida hockey rink led a South Florida parent to run out onto the ice and punch a teen player who had elbowed his son during a match, officials said.
Dr. Matthew Supran was arrested Sunday after he struck the 14-year-old boy, who plays on the opposing team, and slammed his head against the glass while grabbing the player's face mask. The incident took place at Palm Beach Skate Zone in Lake Worth.
"This is hockey; sometimes they're going to end up hit ... accidentally," said Kristie Cardieri, the teen's mother. "It would never cross my mind to run across the ice and attack the child."
The victim admitted he hit Supran's son, who plays for the Palm Beach Junior Hawks, but claimed the strike was accidental. The player received a 5-minute penalty, but witnesses said Supran, who was also the chiropractor for his son's team, appeared to deem the punitive measure insufficient.
"Parents get really worked up at these games," said Cardieri. "A lot of them say and do things they shouldn't do. This went to a whole new level, and then I saw him hit him again, and my son went down."
Andre Gizzi, who works next door to Supran's practice, said he's shocked by the incident. "[Dr. Supran is] is friendly, calm, always concerned about everybody, so I'm surprised," he said.
Palm Beach Skate Zone management has since banned Supran from future games. They issued the following statement: "We are issuing a trespass order against the parent. This unfortunate and extremely rare incident is not a reflection of the game of hockey or our program. Skate Zone will continue to offer safe, fun and supervised hockey leagues for our players and their families to enjoy."
"Unfortunately, it's now my job to teach my son that it's not OK to let an adult hit him," said Cardieri.
Supran was charged with felony child abuse. He declined to comment for this story.
