Tourists' rental car targeted by crooks
WEST MIAMI-DADE, Fla. (WSVN) -- A family on vacation from Puerto Rico woke up to find their rental SUV on bricks Thursday morning.
Rafael Delgado and his family fell victim to money-hungry crooks during their yearly trip to South Florida. "In the morning, about 10 a.m., we saw the car over the blocks," Delgado said.
The rental car, a black Cadillac Escalade, was in the parking lot at the Miami Hilton Airport Hotel. The wheels were stripped, a window broken and their valuables stolen. "They steal a bag with credit cards and money," Delgado said.
The thieves stole $2,000, along with a parking ticket to gain access to the gated lot. "We called the security here, then we called the police, they came and take information and everything," Delgado said.
The owner of the rental company, Just 4 Luxury, arrived and helped Delgado first and foremost. "I came, and I gave him another car," the owner said.
The total damages to the car reached $8,500. "Just waiting to see what happens," the owner said. "Waiting for the insurance, see how they are going to pay, how the hotel is going to react."
The vehicle was fixed and repaired, and the owner of the vehicle hopes that by coming forward, someone will offer a tip to police as to who is behind the crime and help track the personal valuables stolen from the family of six on vacation.
Surveillance video from the hotel has not yet been released.
