Officer arrested after allegedly having sex with teen
PINECREST, Fla. (WSVN) -- A South Florida police department is taking action against one of its own after alarming accusations were made against a veteran officer.
Thirty-eight-year-old Pinecrest Police officer Kevin McKenzie stands accused of having a relationship with a 16-year-old girl. A prosecutor told a judge in court, "The defendant met her while he was on duty. She was a witness in the case that he was investigating and thereafter struck up a relationship with her."
According to the arrest report, the relationship included sexual intercourse on two separate occasions at McKenzie's home. Prosecutors said McKenzie gave the teen a cell phone to use only to communicate with him.
Miami-Dade Police heard about the relationship and had the teen call McKenzie to listen into their conversation. Police detectives had the girl tell McKenzie that she was pregnant. "He indicated that if that happened he would wind-up in jail or in prison, and he would rather die," said a prosecutor in court.
The teen was never pregnant. It was all part of the sting.
During McKenzie's first appearance in court, he had his head down and at times was biting his lips. "I've worked with Kevin for six years, and I have nothing negative to say about the man," said Pinecrest Police Department Detective Alexandra Martinez when asked by a reporter if McKenzie was a good colleague to work with.
Martinez called McKenzie a great guy and was shocked by the allegations. "There's just no way you can predict anyone being charged with anything along these lines. It's just, we are completely floored, every single one of us are floored," said Martinez.
McKenzie has been suspended without pay. The chief recommended the village manager to terminate him from the roster.
The village manager is expected to follow the chief's recommendations and terminate McKenzie. His termination is set to be finalized sometime next week.
