Family shares ordeal after car crashes into home
NORTH LAUDERDALE, Fla. (WSVN) -- The South Florida family whose home sustained extensive structural damage Friday after a car crashed into the property gave their account of the incident that sent a woman, her daughter and the driver of the vehicle to the hospital.
"It's terrible because my baby and my daughter [were injured]," said Gloria Sookie, as she surveyed the damage of her rented North Lauderdale home one day after 76-year-old Gloria Dorman Lee lost control of her Toyota Camry, plowed through the rear of the house and wound up in the kitchen, where Tania and Davia Blake, Sookie's daughter and granddaughter, were located. "I'm telling you, I'm beside my mind right now," she added.
"I was sitting watching TV and then I hear that sound, then I jumped on top of the settee," said 6-year-old Davia Blake, who was watching cartoons at the time of the collision. Her mother was washing dishes.
"I heard a loud sound, and then I thought it was an earthquake," said Tania.
The victims escaped two close calls: first the car, and then the appliances that turned into projectiles after the impact. The stove and the TV hit the ceiling and the wall.
"The car went in-between the both of them," said Sookie.
Gloria's 14-year-old grandson freed his mother and little sister from the debris. "My brother came looking for me because my mom told him to," said Davia.
Gloria, a nurse, was on her way home from work when the accident occurred. She said it's amazing no one was seriously hurt, including the driver, who told police she swerved to avoid hitting another vehicle.
Rescue crews transported Dorman Lee, Tania and Davia to University Hospital, where they were treated and released for minor injuries. Davia's arm is currently secured on a sling. Tania, who was visiting her mother from Jamaica, has some pain, as well as bumps and bruises, and a few fractures.
"I cry all night when I went back," said Sookie. "I'm trying to live, and this is what happened, but thank God they're OK."
Tania and her three children are visiting South Florida to attend her brother's graduation. The entire family is currently staying with Sookie's sister.
