Police investigate discovery of human remains in charred car
HIALEAH, Fla. (WSVN) -- Authorities are investigating the discovery of at least one body found in a burned car.
Police found the four-door Mercedes-Benz fully engulfed in flames at about 3 a.m. Monday in the parking lot of an industrial area, near 80th Street and West 21st Lane. "What they discovered was what appears to be human remains inside that vehicle," said Hialeah Police Sgt. Eddie Rodriguez.
After crews extinguished the blaze, investigators said the car was so badly burned that they had difficulty identifying the make and model of the vehicle or determine how many bodies are in the car. "The fact that the vehicle was set on fire makes the investigation more difficult," said Rodriguez. "So, now we need the help of the forensics office to go in there and determine how many people or what was inside that vehicle that was set on fire."
One man who works nearby was shocked by the gruesome crime. "It's really a shame things like that happen, but that's the world we live in," said Roy Mastraba.
John Goranitis keeps equipment in a nearby storage unit in this industrial area. "Very surprised," he said. "I saw the police. I tell you, I'm nervous. I'm nervous, because I never thought this would happen here."
Officials are hoping surveillance video from surrounding businesses may give them some clues in this tragedy.
Hialeah Police and detectives continue to investigate.
