Dive boat runs aground off Port Everglades

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (WSVN) -- Rescue crews have hauled an 80-foot dive boat off of a sandbar after it ran aground just north of Port Everglades.

It remains unclear what caused the grounding of the Nekton Rorqual, a cruise vessel specially designed for diving enthusiasts, on a sandbar just before 4 p.m. Tuesday. But high winds and rough surf may have contributed to the grounding.

The United States Coast Guard worked with Tow Boat US to drag the boat off the sand bar by 5 p.m.. They had hoped to receive some assistance from the high tide at about 8:30 p.m. but the tow boats did the job against the rough surf.

The boat had 15 people on board who were not injured.
