ATM stolen from South Florida business
MIAMI (WSVN) -- Miami Police are investigating the scene of a stolen ATM at a South Florida business early Monday morning.
The Twin Dixie Bait and Tackle store has conducted business for 22 years along the 79th Street Causeway and Northeast 10th Court, and it has never seen anything like this. "Basically someone came in with a chain and opened the doors, picked the locks and took the ATM," said co-owner Lazaro Garcia.
Investigators are searching for clues, while the owners are left shaking their heads. "This is a sign of the times, things are getting rough. This whole neighborhood is getting out of hand, and it's just a sign of the times," said Garcia.
This incident comes just one week after crooks were captured on surveillance video in North Miami crashing their van through a car wash in an attempt to steal the ATM inside, but it was bolted down. A little more than a week before, another unsuccessful ATM heist occurred in North Miami as the bandits used a backhoe to try and tear an ATM from a bank.
In both those earlier cases, the thieves left without cash. In the Twin Dixie case, police said the thieves made off with about $3,000.
The owners of the store said the machine had just been filled on Saturday, and Heriberto Prosper, Garcia's partner, said he does not plan on installing a new ATM. "I didn't want to put an ATM, but I did it about two years ago," he said. "I will never have another ATM in my store."
