Bystander shot by armed robber

HOLLYWOOD, Fla. (WSVN) -- Authorities said a man stepped out of his house around 8:30 p.m. Sunday and came face to face with an armed robber.

According to police, a 21-year-old female was walking down the street in the area of South 17th Avenue, when she was approached by a man who tried to snatch her backpack. The young woman attempted to hold on to the backpack while screaming for help.

Police said David Brough, 41, heard the commotion and exited his home and noticed the altercation in the street but did not realize it was a robbery.

The suspect fired his weapon at Brough, striking him once in his upper body. The suspect then fled the area on foot.

Police said a second robbery occurred about two minutes after the first incident, and they believe it was committed by the same suspect. "What are the charges he may be facing at this time? At this time I'm not sure because it's so early in the investigation, but hopefully we will be able to develop a little more information about this individual and charge him," Lt. Manny Marino said.

Authorities transported the 41-year-old to Memorial Regional Hospital. He is expected to be OK.

No other information is available.
