BSO confiscate drugs and guns after crackdown

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (WSVN) -- The Broward Sheriff held a press conference to announce the seizure of drugs and weapons plus numerous arrests of dangerous criminals.

Broward County Sheriff Al Lamberti praised the effort dubbed Operation Dirty South, Friday morning. He said it started as an effort to crack down on drug and violent activity in the south-end of the county back in May.

It unfurled into a major mission, leading to 34 arrests, the seizure of $40,000 in cash and $80,000 in drugs.

Lamberti emphasized the danger the criminals posed to the public and even one another. "When we started making arrests, some of the other members out there got so paranoid, they started plotting to kill each other to avoid being snitched on," he said, "so when I say they're violent, they're really violent."

Using tips from sources reporting to Crime Stoppers, police also foiled a plot to murder an armored truck guard and steal his delivery.

Deputies also seized 16 weapons, including two so-called cop killer weapons, which they feared would have been used to kill the armored truck guard.
