Police search for crooks who took off with dangerous fertilizer

DANIA BEACH, Fla. (WSVN) -- The Broward Sheriff's Office is taking every precaution after someone stole a pickup truck filled with dangerous fertilizer.
Investigators said the fertilizer contains a chemical that can be very dangerous if it falls in the wrong hands.
Police said landscapers from out of town were staying at a Red Carpet Inn, and when they woke up the next morning their red Ford F-350 pickup was missing from the parking lot. "In the bed of that truck are 12 bags of fertilizer, and the chemical used in that fertilizer is ammonium nitrate, and this is a concern because it can also be used in explosives," explained BSO spokeswoman Dani Moschella.
The thieves tried to steal another pickup from the same parking lot Tuesday night but were unsuccessful. "It has a raised a few red flags because this chemical can be used to make explosives," Moschella said.
Police believe the suspects responsible for this crime are just car thieves with no intent on blowing anything up. "But again we don't believe that there is not any imminent threat of explosion," Moschella added.
Authorities said the pickup has the words "Dean's Environmental Service" on it.
If you have any information on this theft, call Broward County Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS. Remember, you can always remain anonymous, and you may be eligible for a reward.
