Person drowns off shore in Surfside

SURFSIDE, Fla. (WSVN) -- Police are investigating an off-shore drowning death in Surfside.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue crews responded to the deadly drowning behind the Surfside Beach Club, located at 92nd Street and Collins Avenue, Thursday afternoon.

When rescuers arrived, they found the person dead after lifeguards had tried to save the swimmer's life.

Lifeguards had reported seeing the person having trouble swimming in the surf and called fire rescue crews for assistance.

Weather forecasters did report that there was a moderate risk of rip currents off the Atlantic beaches that day.

When it was determined the swimmer had died, Bal Harbor and Miami-Beach police arrived at the scene to begin their investigation.

Crime scene tape surrounded the body, which they had covered with a white tarp, as they decided who will take over the investigation into how this person's swim lead to their own death.
