Nelson listens to cancer concerns in small town
WELLINGTON, Fla. (AP) -- Residents in a small Palm Beach County community who are worried that an abnormally high number of brain cancer cases have creeped up shared their concerns with U.S. Senator Bill Nelson.
About 20 families from The Acreage area told their experiences to Nelson on Wednesday. Nearly all said they live or lived within about 4 miles of each other.
Nelson said "there certainly appears to be a problem in a specific geography." He said he has asked the Environmental Protection Agency and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to coordinate with the state to investigate.
The Florida Department of Health will determine in the next few weeks whether the incidence rate for the disease is greater than it should be and if the agency needs to launch an investigation.
