NORTHWEST MIAMI-DADE, Fla. (WSVN) -- City officials and activists are urging revelers to holster their weapons to prevent stray bullet holiday tragedies.

Law enforcement held a press conference Friday morning warning people about firing bullets into the sky. They once again, like every year put out that message about how tragic incidents occur from stray bullets. Officials want people to have a safe holiday without weapons. "We want people to know to use common sense, good common sense, use other means of expressing the celebration. However, if we catch you with a gun, we're going to arrest you," said Miami Police Chief John Timoney.

On the eve of July 4 a community joined law enforcement to tell the public not to shoot bullets into the air. "That's what bullets will do, hit the target and destroy life, destroy a kid and mess up a kid's life," said Rev. Jerome Starling.

Timoney also said there will be extra patrols out in full force this Fourth of July.
