Deputy rescues woman in South Fla. boat explosion
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) -- A woman is safe after authorities say a deputy rescued her from a boat explosion in Fort Lauderdale.
The Broward Sheriff's Office said Tuesday that deputy Robert Ponevac was heading northbound on the intracoastal behind a 27-foot vessel with six people on board on the Fourth of July when it suddenly exploded. A 64-year-old woman lounging at the rear of the boat was launched into the air, hit the boat and dropped into the water.
The deputy pulled Naomi Eid and her son, Marwan, onto his boat. They had minor injuries and did not need to be transported to the hospital. Fire officials arrived and put the blaze on the boat out.
Authorities say the boat engine had a fuel leak that caused the explosion.
