FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (WSVN) -- A high break heat record was issued for several parts of South Florida Tuesday morning.

According to the National Weather Service in Miami, Fort Lauderdale made a set record temperature of 97 degrees.

At the Fontainebleau Hotel on Miami Beach, staff handed out chilled towels and sprayed guest with sunscreen to keep them cool and protected. "As of this morning from 9:00 a.m. we were just in the pool cooling off," said Fontainebleau guest, Rebecca Enaytian.

Doctors suggest for every one to slow down on their outdoor activities, dress in light weight and light color clothing. Also, do not expose the body to too much sun. Sunburns can be tough for the body to cool off, and to avoid drinking alcohol beverages. "For someone that's just coming from up north and they insist on being out in the beach and in the sun, I have a word of caution for them, they have to be very very careful for sun burn and dehydration," said Chief of emergency medicine, Dr. Nabil El Sanadi.

Dr. Sanadi recommends people to keep the body hydrated as much as possible during these high temperatures. "People who drink a lot of water they pre-hydrate themselves and they are able to tolerate heat better. When people drink alcohol, alcohol believe it or not is a diuretic, so that actually dries water out of the system," said Dr. Sanadi.

Outdoor workers are advised to keep their bodies well hydrated with water while working in these high temperatures. "Keep hydrating your self that's it. We watch out for each other to make sure that no one exhausts themselves and to take breaks," said outside worker, Breeze Hartman.

Doctors said that if you are outdoors and you start to feel week and dizzy, go inside and hydrate yourself. If you start to shiver and feel dizzy, it is advise that you call 911.
