Items seized in cat killing case might be returned
MIAMI (AP) -- A judge is expected to hear arguments on whether to release property that was seized while police investigated the killings of more than a dozen cats in two south Miami-Dade County neighborhoods.
A motion filed by 18-year-old Tyler Hayes Weinman's attorney says the seized property does not represent "the fruit of criminal activity." The items belong to Weinman and his parents, who live in the two communities where the cat killings took place.
Weinman is charged with 19 counts each of animal cruelty and improperly disposing of an animal body. He also faces four counts of burglary related to the cat deaths, and has pleaded not guilty.
According to court documents, police removed several items during the investigation, including box cutters, knives, needles and a dental tool.
