Thieves steal from local cub scouts

SUNRISE, Fla. (WSVN) -- They've held countless fundraisers over the years to buy the equipment, but now, thanks to some thieves, future camping trips may have to be canceled.

Parents said someone must have made off with the trailer belonging to Pack 114 sometime between April and this past Sunday. The Cub Scouts had hoped to take it and the hard-earned equipment on a camping trip. Cub Scout Chase Ekland said the trailer had some cool gear. "Every time we go camping we do this thing called geocaching, so there's these capsules, and we have to find all this stuff."

The trailer held about $5,000 worth of equipment that the children accumulated by volunteering through fund raisers. The trailer itself is worth $3,000.

Pack Chair Linda Jensen said the cost of this loss is much more than monetary. "A pretty big emotional toll because we're new, we're learning and now we have to start from scratch," she said.

Cub Master Danny McCormick said: "They actually stole the hard work that the kids did over years and now we have to start all over again."

If you have any information on who may have targeted these children, call Broward County Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS. Remember, you can always remain anonymous, and you may be eligible for a reward.
