Protesters speak out against pitbull's death without owner's consent

MIAMI (WSVN) -- Protesters staged a dog fight outside a Miami-Dade animal services shelter in the wake of a recently euthanized animal.

The Miami Coalition Against Breed Specific Legislation organized a peaceful protest Saturday, in order to demonstrate their opposition to the actions recently taken by Miami Dade County, Animal Services and related officials. Their concern: The owner of a pitbull mix didn't get a fair chance to save his dog after it attacked a postal worker which sent her to the hospital.

The owners disputed the claim and said they plan to take the battle to court. "It was just one-sided with us getting the short end of the stick. Our dog is gone and nothing we do, and nothing that can happen will bring him back, but if we can stop another dog from being slaughtered like that, then his death wasn't in vain," Maria Fernandez said.

The dog was classified as a pitbull mix which is illegal in Miami.
