Teen struck, killed by SUV while driving go-cart in street
NORTHEAST MIAMI-DADE, Fla. (WSVN) -- A 13-year-old boy died after a sport utility vehicle struck him Monday afternoon while he drove a go-cart on a roadway.
Witnesses said Omar Jamal Muhareb was driving the small vehicle along Northeast 11th Avenue and 199th Street with his friends when he collided with a Dodge Durango driven by 34-year-old Samuel McDermott at approximately 4:08 p.m.
Emergency crews airlifted the boy to Jackson Memorial Hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead.
Area residents said a lot of local kids play in the neighborhood's streets and several of the youths own go-carts. Many of them gathered where Muhareb died Tuesday afternoon.
According to police, motorized go-carts are not licensed or equipped to be used on Florida's public roads.
The boy's friends and relatives are heading to South Florida from all over the U.S. to join the teen's grieving family for his Wednesday funeral. "He was full of love, he was very affectionate," said his sister, Mnar Muhareb. "He loved [his family and friends]."
Much to the disappointment of Ahmud Muhareb, the victim's brother, Miami-Dade Police have not charged the driver of the SUV, who stayed on the scene until police arrived. However, an investigation into the accident remains ongoing. "I feel like there should be some type of charge because this doesn't seem right to me," said Muhareb.
