Mother loses life after lipo, police investigate

WESTON, Fla. (WSVN) -- Police are investigating what lead to the death of a mother of three who tragically lost her life after a cosmetic procedure.
A devastated family has been left to mourn a young mother who was left on life support for two weeks. Police have confirmed that Rohie Orukaton, 37, died Friday after what family attorneys called an unusual liposuction at Weston MedSpa. "We're pretty certain that the evidence is pointing to the fact that it was a full blown liposuction procedure, and the evidence also pointed to the fact that there was an excessive amount of lidocaine used during the surgery," said attorney Anthony Russo.
Orukaton's family and lawyers are waiting pending toxicology reports to tell them if the mother of three died of an accidental overdose or an allergic reaction to a medication given during the two-hour procedure. Russo claims Weston MedSpa was not licensed to perform the medical procedure and ill-equipped for the medical emergency, which ensued when Orukaton started seizing in a recovery room on Sept. 25. "I don't think they had the facility equipped to handle the procedures that they did," said Russo.
Brian Bieber is a lawyer for the doctor who performed the liposuction. He said Dr. Omar Brito is certain toxicology reports will clear his name. "We need to wait for the medical examiner to issue his report, so that we can know exactly what happened. What is certain, according to Dr. Brito, is that he did nothing wrong," Bieber said. "Doctor Brito is crushed by the passing of his patient."
According to Dr. Brito's lawyers, Weston MedSpa had no license to perform this type of liposuction, which is usually called liposculpting, because it is minimally invasive.
Complicating matters, the family's lawyer said Weston MedSpa is not making Orukaton's medical records available. They would now have to take them to court in order to obtain them.
The toxicology report can take six to eight weeks to be released.
