Fire displaces family of 10

NORTHWEST MIAMI-DADE, Fla. (WSVN) -- Several people, most of whom children, have been left homeless after a fire ripped through an apartment.

The American Red Cross has come to the aid of this family nine children, headed by a single mother, for the time being. "I went to go pick up my daughter from school, my girlfriend called me to tell me the house is on fire, it's electrical and in the bedroom," said Kenyatta McDonald, the mother of children ranging in age from 7 months to 16 years of age.

The apartment she used to call home was left a burned out ruin. Now all she has to call her own are a few items and some clothing firefighters were able to help salvage.

Friday afternoon, smoke could be seen from a window of the home located 7555 NW 17 Ave. Luckily all inside, including two small pet dogs were able to escape the fire unharmed. "So I got the babies, I got the two children and ran out the door," said a family friend who had been babysitting the 7-month-old and 2-year-old.

The mother is grateful that no one was injured but wonders where she will go next. "I don't want to be homeless," she said. "For one, I just overcame being homeless."

Fire investigators confirmed that the fire was electrical.
