Deadly rip currents and beach erosion along South Florida beaches

Deadly rip currents and beach erosion along South Florida beaches

HAULOVER BEACH, Fla. (WSVN) -- Authorities are urging beachgoers in Miami-Dade and Broward counties to be cautious of rip currents.

Officials are warning beachgoers to be aware of the dangers of entering the water Wednesday, as heavy winds and high waves have red flags flying.

On some beaches the currents have caused beach erosion. Beach Erosion Specialist Stephen Higgins said, "Those areas such as South Hollywood and Hallandale Beach areas are taking a hit. You're seeing waves come up almost to the structures of those areas because of these conditions."

Beachgoers should take the following precautionary and preparedness actions:

-Swim at guarded beaches and heed to the advice of beach patrol.
-If caught in the seaward pull of a rip current do not attempt to move directly toward shore, instead move sideways across the rip currents until the pull eases.
-Throw the rip current victim something that floats: a life-jacket, a cooler or inflatable ball.
-Never go into the water alone, and if you aren't a strong swimmer, stick to shallow waters.

Hotels that are along the beach are warning their guests to stay away from the water and to be extremely careful if they decide to go in.
