Police investigate Overtown shooting that left 2 dead, 1 injured

MIAMI (WSVN) -- Police have little to go on after three people were shot in Overtown, leaving two of them dead.

City of Miami Police said someone used an automatic weapon, most likely and AK-47 assault rifle, to shoot up the victims outside Corrine's Diner, in the area of Northwest Seventh Street and Fifth Avenue in Miami's Overtown section, in broad daylight Wednesday afternoon.

Miami Fire Rescuers transported two victims to Jackson Memorial Hospital, where one later died. Another man laid dead on the scene. Donna Lowe said that her son, 21-year-old Jeremy Lowe, was the deceased victim on the scene. She said she has no idea why he would be a target for such violence. "We don't know why they were after him for," she said.

Police do not have descriptions of the shooters. All they have to go on is that a black sport utility vehicle was somehow involved.

"We don't know if the person or persons that fired at these three people knew each other, what the motive is. Everything is very preliminary at this point," said Miami Police Detective Kenia Alfonso.

Miami Police Chief John Timoney arrived on the scene for a press conference soon after police cleared the evidence scene, hoping to generate some eyewitness leads as to who might be responsible for this shooting. He also noted his stance against the weapon used in this attack. "Anybody that wants to debate me that somehow assault weapons are covered under the second amendment is ridiculous," he said. "Those weapons are weapons of war."

Meanwhile, Miami Commissioner Michelle Spence-Jones was actually nearby the shooting scene and saw the aftermath soon after she heard the gunfire. "It's senseless, 12 people months ago, now we've got three people in the heart of Overtown being shot on the streets, something's got to change" she said, referring to other fatal, unsolved shootings in the area.

She was shaken up by the scene, which included the dead body, a shocking first for the commissioner. "I've never seen a dead person, never," Spence-Jones said.

She plans to go door-to-door in the community to hand out Hot Spot cards, pre-paid postcards that witnesses can fill in with complete anonymity and drop off in the mail.

If you have any information on this shooting, call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS. Remember, you can always remain anonymous, and you may be eligible for a reward.
