State auctions off unclaimed property

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (WSVN) -- An auction is offering a gem of a deal in our own backyard.

The Florida Bureau of Unclaimed Property is holding an annual sell-off of unclaimed safe deposit contents on Saturday. More than 40,000 items will be auctioned off in Fort Lauderdale.

Everything from jewelry to sports memorabilia is up for grabs. "We've got gold coins, jewelry of all shapes, sizes, from costume jewelry to our showcase piece, which is a 13 karat diamond ring," said Rick Sweet, the Assistant Chief of the Bureau of Unclaimed Property.

Sweet said those interested in bidding will have to register first. "In order to participate in the auction, there's a registration process, you provide a photo ID and a refundable $100 deposit."

The auction will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Embassy Suites Hotel in Fort Lauderdale.
