Disbarred former Fla. judge faces several felonies

Disbarred former Fla. judge faces several felonies

MIAMI (AP) -- A former Miami-Dade judge is accused of bilking more than $80,000 from a nonprofit college grant.

Phillip Davis helped found the Miami-Dade Resident College in the late 1990s after losing his judgeship in a corruption case. He admitted snorting cocaine in his chambers, but claimed drug and alcohol addiction led him down the wrong path. Jurors acquitted him in 1993 on the bribery and extortion charges after the tearful admission.

Davis took the stand on new charges Monday, insisting he did nothing wrong.

He faces several felony charges, including money laundering and grand theft, for allegedly sending bogus invoices to skim money intended for the college.

Jurors weren't told about the previous allegations, or that Davis was disbarred, but did learn of his law degree.
