Fla. yacht broker seeks probation in UBS tax case
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) -- A Florida yacht broker is asking a judge for probation on a tax conviction because of his assistance in the U.S. investigation of secret accounts at Swiss bank UBS AG.
British-born Robert Moran, 58, faces up to a year and four months in prison at a sentencing hearing Friday. Prosecutors seek less than a year in prison because of Moran's cooperation.
Moran, who is also a U.S. citizen, is the third former UBS client to be sentenced in Florida federal court in the past two weeks. Moran pleaded guilty in April to filing a false tax return. Prosecutors said he used UBS accounts to conceal some $3 million.
UBS is turning over hundreds of names of suspected American tax cheats in a deal with the U.S. Justice Department.
