MIAMI LAKES, Fla. (WSVN) -- Family and friends gathered to say goodbye to a man they said died as a hero in the line of duty.

Hundreds came out on Saturday to honor and say goodbye to Louis Maxwell, 27, at Vista Memorial Gardens, for Maxwell's burial. "Louis Maxwell is a good friend, and a warrior, above all. He's leaving behind a good family. He will be missed," Sergeant Isaiah Bullock said. "It's a day of mourning and rejoice. We know that as a Christian, he is in a better place. As a warrior, he died on his feet, and as a friend he will be missed," said Bullock.

Maxwell was an ex-Navy Seal who became a close protection officer for the United Nations. He was killed a week ago in Afghanistan after Taliban militants stormed the guest house he was guarding.

His mother Sandra was inconsolable a few days ago after she heard the news of her son's death. "He was very determined and very courageous. He didn't think about himself. He thought about others," said Sandra. "He didn't die in vain. He died doing what he loved."

The 27-year-old left behind his parents, a sister and two sons.
