FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) -- The identity of the pilot killed when his small plane crashed in the Florida Everglades has been confirmed.

The Broward County Sheriff's Office announced Thursday that 40-year-old Edmundo Velazquez of Oviedo was the pilot whose body was found in the wreckage.

Authorities say the Air Force reserve lieutenant colonel was returning from an airshow at the Homestead Air Reserve Base on Sunday night when his plane crashed. He was headed for Ocala.

Aviation officials say Velazquez did not make any distress calls.

Velazquez flew to South Florida often for monthly training at the Homestead base. He worked there for more than 20 years in aircraft maintenance and was known as an expert on F-16 fighter jets.
