New mayor taking over in Broward County

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (WSVN) -- Commissioners voted unanimously to elect Ken Keechl for the one year term.

Keechl represents parts of Fort Lauderdale, Hollywood and Wilton Manors. He'll serve as Broward's first openly gay mayor. "I was pleasantly surprised when I found out that we made history today because I'm apparently now the highest openly gay mayor in the country," said Keechl, "And I'm honored to have that distinction and to be a first, but really, I'm more excited about being a mayor and running Broward County."

Keechl replaces Stacy Ritter, who's had a rough several months. Ritter's father, a mayoral candidate in Tamarac, was arrested for allegedly pointing a gun at her. Authorities said he was upset his daughter backed his opponent in the race.
