Sister mourns loss of sibling after fiery car crash
HOLLYWOOD, Fla. (WSVN) -- A sister is mourning the loss of her sibling who was killed by a reckless driver.
The last time Audrey Simpson-Lopez spoke to her younger sister, Kiesha Price, was on Monday morning. By Monday evening, a fiery car wreck killed her on Interstate 95. "I don't even know what to tell her kids because my niece is asking for her mother," Audrey said.
Florida Highway Patrol said 23-year-old Jacob Payne from Hallandale Beach sped down the highway with two passengers in a Cadillac Escalade when he collided with two vehicles. Payne kept going and eventually rear-ended a Ford Expedition driven by Price. Both vehicles caught on fire.
Payne and his two passengers are recovering at Memorial Regional Hospital. According to state troopers, charges are pending against Payne.
Price leaves behind her husband, who was also hospitalized after the accident, her 6-year-old son and a 3-year-old daughter. "It's so sad. She couldn't get out of the truck. She was just trying to get to them, and the guy was driving so fast," said Simpson-Lopez.
"I got a call in the night that she's dead. That there was an accident and she didn't make it," Simpson-Lopez noted.
She and her family used a tattoo to identify her sister because her body was left unrecognizable following the fire. "That's my only sister. That's the only sister I have, and I won't see her again, and it's sad," she said, struggling through her tears.
Her husband, meanwhile, remains in critical condition. Rescuers had to airlift him to Memorial Regional Hospital.
Simpson-Lopez said she will have to fly her mother to South Florida from Jamaica within the next two weeks, so that they can cremate Price's body for the funeral.
